Planned Giving

What matters to you?

The church where you worship. The schools your children attend. The park where your grandchildren love to play. A local charity you care deeply about. How can you ensure that the things that make your community unique continue, long after you’re gone? Right now, we have an opportunity to create a better future for Hillsboro and the state of Kansas. By keeping just 5% of our wealth in our state through local community foundations, we can improve our quality of life, and strengthen the places we call home.

Many people allocate their entire estate to their children, but as more people leave the communities where they were raised, much of this inherited wealth will leave Kansas. It’s increasingly important for Kansans to reinvest resources back into the places where they earned their living and enjoyed a good life.

Marga Ebel

  • Donated $360,000 to the Hillsboro Community Foundation to establish the Marga Ebel Health Fund
  • Addresses the health needs of local children
  • Hillsboro school district now has a program that provides dental screenings to all students, and dental work to children needing urgent or significant care whose families qualify for assistance
  • Endowment provided $18,000 to the dental program in its first year alone

Why donate to the community foundation rather than directly to a charity?

Donating to a charity or nonprofit directly can certainly make a difference. However, by establishing funds through the Hillsboro Community Foundation for your favorite charities and causes, you can make an even greater impact and sustain your charitable giving long after you are gone.

Hillsboro Community Foundation can help protect your charitable dollars and your interests. As time goes on, unexpected circumstances can arise. A charity may shift its focus or change its mission, suffer from mismanagement, or even cease its existence, in which case your donation would not be used in the best possible way — or even used at all. However, when you allocate funds to a charity or organization through a community foundation, you can be assured that the foundation will take care of your funds in the way you intended by applying the variance power. No matter what happens, HCF is here to safeguard your gift, enabling you to support the causes you care about into perpetuity.

In addition, the community foundation can pool and leverage resources with those of other donors in the area who have similar goals and interests, allowing your gift to do even more good than it would on its own as a direct donation. They are also able to process complex gifts that a charity might not otherwise be able to accept.

Raymond Wiebe

  • Decided to use his portion of the estate to honor his brother David and provide support for the Adobe House Museum and Hillsboro Museums Board.
  • Donated $50,000 to the Hillsboro Community Foundation to endow the David F. Wiebe Memorial Fund for Hillsboro Pioneer Adobe House and Museum
  • Earnings from the endowment may be used for various museum expenses and projects.
  • It was Raymond’s hope that the fund will help ensure the future of the Adobe House Museum and preserve the history of the Mennonite culture for many years to come.
