Disaster Relief

The Hillsboro Community Disaster Relief Fund provides grants to nonprofit and charitable organizations in Hillsboro and surrounding communities that have been impacted by disasters. Funded projects should aim to:
- Immediate Relief: Foundations, agencies, nonprofits, and volunteers provide essential aid—food, shelter, water, medical care, and burial services—right after a disaster.
- Short-Term Recovery: As media attention fades, philanthropic support ensures continued access to food, health care, shelter, and sanitation for survivors.
- Long-Term Rebuilding: Recovery can take years. Strategic investments help rebuild infrastructure, restore the environment, and address deeper social and environmental challenges.

Your gift becomes part of something bigger when joined with others, empowering us to respond swiftly and support recovery when it’s needed most—today, tomorrow, and in the future.
Activating the Fund
Disasters eligible for recovery response include, but are not limited to, natural disasters, industrial accidents, acts of terrorism, or other incidents of mass violence.
Upon activation of the fund, grant relief applications will be made available. When determining whether to activate the fund, the Hillsboro Community Foundation (HCF) considers several factors, including:

- The severity of the disaster
- The geographic scope of its impact
- The needs of affected individuals
- The availability of existing relief and recovery resources
In its initial phase, activating the fund means HCF will begin targeted fundraising efforts specific to the disaster in question.
Grants from the Fund
All funds raised are awarded as grants to eligible nonprofit organizations or government entities that support recovery efforts for individuals and communities affected by disasters.
The Hillsboro Community Foundation can make grants to the following organizations:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
- Government
- Education
- Religious
Individuals or organizations that do NOT fall into one of the above entities are encouraged to partner with a fiscal agent in one of those categories. Management of the organization should be in the hands of reliable, ethical, and experienced personnel.
Grants are typically restricted to the geographic areas served by the Hillsboro Community Foundation.
Philanthropic Preparedness Resiliency and Emergency Partnership (PPREP)
As affiliate host to HCF, the Central Kansas Community Foundation continues to participate with a group of 21 community foundations from 10 Midwest states in the Philanthropic Preparedness Resiliency and Emergency Partnership (PPREP) sponsored by The Funders’ Network of Coral Gables, Florida. PPREP is about strengthening the relationships between community members and organizations to maximize their impact in preparing for and recovering from disasters.
